Valentine Brookman Jr.

Attached is the information I have compiled for Valentine Brookman, Jr.  His father was Johann Vallentin Bruchman(Johann Valentin Bruckman, who arrived in Philadelphia on the ship "John and Elizabeth" on 7 November 1754. Valentine (Sr) took the oath of allegiance in Philadelphia.

In 1761 Valentin Bruchman (Sr) appears at the North Fork of the Shenandoah River near present day Strasburg, Virginia. This is covered in the book, "Leben und Wandeln" by Brother Ezechiel Sangmeister, published by the historical society of the Cocalico (Pennsylvania) Valley.

By 1777 Valentine Brickman (Sr) is back in Pennsylvania, listed as a weaver on the tax lists of Cocalico Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He had returned from Virginia in the later 1760's with the Eckerlins and had apparently been involved in the Ephrata Cloister brotherhood, which was experiencing a major internal controversy. In 1770 there is a marriage listed for Valentine Brookman and Philippina Good in Trinity Lutheran Church, Lancaster.

I have the tax lists showing Valentine in Cumberland County, PA 1786-1789. He appears in the 1790 census for Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.In 1794 Valentine Brookman appears in the Shenandoah County, Virginia tax lists with sons Valentine Jr and Peter. In 1797 the grandchildren (children of Valentine Jr.) are baptized in Shenandoah County. Johannes born 17 March

1797 baptized 1 July 1797, Elisabeth born 11 June 1793 baptized 24 Sept 1797 and Susanna born 4 Dec 1794 baptized 24 Sept 1797.in 1807 Valentine Brookman appears in the Wythe County, Virginia tax lists. Whether is is Valentine Sr or Valentine Jr is unknown.In 1839 Valentine Brookman Jr appears in the tax lists for Pulaski County, Virginia (Pulaski was formed from Wythe in 1839).In the 1840 census for Pulaski, no Valentine Brookman appears, but there is a listing for a Catherine Brookman, with the household members of the correct ages for Valentine Jr's family.

VALENTINE BROOKMAN JR.  was born near Ephrata, Cocalico Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania circa 1760-1770,

child of Johann Vallentin Bruchmann  (Valentine Brookman/Bruckman/Brickman/Bruchmann Sr.) and Philippina Good.  Circa 1790 he married CATHERINE __________________,  she also born in Pennsylvania between 1770-1775.  He died between 1830-1840 and Catherine died

between 1840-1850, most likely in Pulaski County, Virginia.  Children:  (all were most likely born Virginia)

 

 

1)  ELIZABETH  born 11 June 1793 and baptized in Shenandoah County, VA on 24 Sept 1797, married Joseph Faulkner/Fortner

1821 in Wythe (later became Pulaski) County, Virginia (Marriage Bond)  Children:  John, William, Mary Ann, Thomas, Jane, and

possibly Virginia.

 

2)  SUSANNA  born 4 Dec 1794 and baptized in Shenandoah County, VA on 24 Sept 1797, married Philip Fink? Children: Sherman,

Matilda, Margaret, Catherine, Elizabeth Jane, William, Nancy, Christian, John, Frederick, Mary, Steven, Malinda, Jacob.

 

3)  JOHANNES (John) born 17 Mar 1797 baptized in Shenandoah County, VA on 2 July 1797 married Rebecca Peck 3 Oct 1822 in Montgomery County, VA.  Removed to Jefferson County, Illinois?

 

4)  PHOEBE born circa 1794-1800 (records say Brankmann) married Peter Fink.  Children: William, Jacob, Elizabeth, Valentine,

Mary, Sarah, Samuel, Lutetia, Margaret.

 

5)  CATHERINE  born circa 1798  never married. Died after 1870 census Pulaski County, VA.

 

6)  WILLIAM  born 17 Oct 1799  married 23 Nov 1827 Mary Ann Peck in Montgomery County, VA.  They removed to

Jefferson County, Illinois circa 1829.  He died 17 May 1872 in Illinois.  Children:  Christopher, John, Valentine, Sarah, Samuel,

Rhoda, Mary Jane, William, Thomas, Stephen, Elisabeth, Eliza V.

 

7)  STEPHEN born circa 1806 married 27 Mar 1834 Malinda Kinser in Wythe County, VA.  Children:  Gustavus, Cynthia,

Gus, John, Valentine, Mahulda, Maggy.

 

8)  SARAH (Sally)  born circa 1808 married 1833 Allen King in Wythe County, VA.  This family appears in the 1850 Grant

County, Wisconsin census with her sister, Elizabeth Fortner and family.  Children:  William, John, Giles, Sarah E., Elizabeth J.,

James P., Valentine.

11)  MARY born circa 1813  never married, died after 1880 census Pulaski County, Virginia.

 

12)  SAMUEL  born circa 1815 married 5 Dec 1839 Mary Blankenship in Pulaski County, Va. Removed to Jefferson

County, Illinois.  Children:  Rhoda, William, John, Gordon, Crockett, Sarah, Margaret, George, Rachel, Eliza E., Mary E., Martha.

 

13) VALENTINE born circa 1816 married 22 Mar 1843 Dorcus Williams in Wythe County, VA.  Children:  Angelika,

Jane, Georgia Ann, Rush, Virginia, Alexander.  1880 census Meigs County, TN.

 

14)  ANNE born circa 1819  married 16 Feb 1841 Isaac Robinson in Pulaski County, VA. Children:  Mary M.,

Eliza A., Bostin, Catherine, Samuel, William, Jonathan.
